African in NYC: DC

It's been a week since I have been back and somehow still struggling to adjust. This trip had more 'twists & turns' then imagined! Left Johannesburg with every intention of stopping in London for a few hours before getting on a plane again, heading to New York. But due to dear old Irene, upon our arrival in London, we were advised that our NYC flight was cancelled and the only option was to fly to Washington. We took that option and stayed in the city for two days. A lesson from this was 'every mishap presents a great opportunity'. Managed to take advantage of the new route by exploring DC, which is a city I had never been before. The first image is the lobby of the hotel we managed to find last minute, Hotel George. A great quirky place that has different artistic images in ode to George Washington himself. Located near the main train station, the plan was to take the train into New York once Irene had passed New York. In DC, I loved how there were so many African restaurants in one part of the town. I also looked for the African Fashion Museum, but word-of-warning, it no longer exists. Overall, a truly beautiful city and a great surprise.

Zimbali in Kwazulu Natal is one of those places that busy South African's escape to, especially those who are lucky enough to have a holiday home. These images are taken from such a scenario. Nneka Egbuna's Soulful Sounds

Off to Germany tomorrow so thought it best to post a topic that relates to my impending trip. Nneka Lucia Egbuna comes to mind. She was born and bred in Warri, Nigeria to a German mother and a Nigerian father. She is a hip-hop singer & songwriter, who has won awards in both continents.

Even though Nneka sings more than raps, she names hip hop as her primary musical root and most important source of inspiration, while citing artists such as Fela Kuti and Bob Marley as well as contemporary rappers Mos Def, Talib Kweli, and Lauryn Hill as key influences in her own pursuit of musical recognition.
Her lyrics reflect much of her history and life in Nigeria as well as her time spent in Western Europe. Her songs stress the issues of capitalism, poverty and war and are often loaded with moral and biblical messages and references, with some music commentators comparing her to Erykah Badu, Neneh Cherry and Floetry. So excited, managed to get a word or two out of one of my favourite local design label, La Lesso. This is what they had to say about their recent fashion show at the Cape Town Fashion Week. They have labelled their new collection Neo African J-peg Generation:

The S/S ’12 collection was inspired by contemporary Africa. Designers Olivia Kennaway and Alice Heusser looked to the digital and progressive era that the continent is entering into. The collection mirroring the way we view Africa, a continent full of passion, romance, power and movement. The combination of old and new and the clashing of cultures, were all aspects that inspiration was drawn from.

The silhouette remains clean, sticking to the Lalesso aesthetic of simple and flattering lines. The collection is a straightforward modern interpretation on Africa.

Thanks to Alice Heusser, one of the co-founders, for taking the time to let us in on their inspiration.

Leigh Schubert's Art Decor @ Cape Town Fashion Week

This Durban-born designer showed at the recent Cape Town Fashion Week, giving evidence to her wealth of experience in the fashion arena. Leigh Schubert once again illustrated her trademark styles. Below, she fills us in on what last weeks show was about.

Main theme in the new collection
**Art deco inspiration.

What have you done differently in this range, when looking at your past ranges
**I think my handwriting it quite consistent. I like feminine clothes with an edge. I almost always include pleats in some form.

How would you describe South AFrican fashion compared to other places around the world
**I think south Africans enjoy supporting local - which is fantastic - but compared to overseas local ready-to-wear designers are very price competitive to other retailers - so it makes us affordable and accessible. South Africans are very individual and arent slaves to trends. I do think we lack knowledge about quality and fabrication. I also think that South Africans generally like quite bold and busy clothes - where simplicity is what is more chic in places like Paris and Sydney.

Where to from here?
** A lot more export - its a focus I have had for a couple of years now.

Nandipha Mntambo Cow Hide Art Form

Nandipha Mntambo for me epitomises what it truly means to creating art that is entrenched in African culture but through modern techniques. She takes cow hides, tans them, manipulates and moulds them onto casts of the female body. The final work is very impressive!

I love how Janine Stephens entitles this home photo shoot 'Southern Comfort', because it really is just that. I don't know if the owners intention was to illustrate the 'African comfort' but that's what comes across from this Cape Town home. I love the layering of the space and how the different fabrics are utilised. I also love how the 'comfort' space flows to the outside area.

Michelle Ludek Tribal Style at Cape town Fashion Week

Having worked extensively in Canada, Michelle Ludek returned to South Africa to share her passion. Her main inspiration is the great South African landscape.

She is now based in Cape Town and showcased at last weeks Cape Town Fashion Week 2011.
"This collection is all about bringing creative talent in South africa together. I had a vision to collaborate with a local artist, Gillian Waldeck, to create a collection that is both modern and feminine so I asked her to hand paint the garments. The jewellery is by Belinda Ludek and the shoes from Coast and Koi. I really believe in keeping every thing local.

On what makes this new range different she says
"I have used more colour, statement jewellery pieces and the gorgeous hand painted garments are pieces of art themselves

Her technique
"I work mailnly with knits and try and create modern, timeless pieces that are very low maintenance for women on the go."

What inspires you about South African fashion
"I think we have something very unique to offer and the talent we have in this country is remarkable. If we look towards ourselves rather than try and "compete" with an international market we will realise how many markets are watching us."

Where to from here?
"First a little break and then the year gets super busy.... I would like to start growing my market to outside SA but for now I will dream up the next collaboration with some more SA talent"

Ntsiki Biyela is a true inspiration for all to follow their passion. Ntsiki is an award-winning wine maker, who grew up having little or no knowledge of the wine industry. She went to study and received a degree in viticulture and enology. She went on to work for Stellekaya, where she still hones her gift. Her talents in this field won her the Landbou Weekblad Woman Winmaker of the Year and even got profiled on CNN!

Over and above designing and selling high-end fashion, Danielle Margaux label sees itself in the business of catering to a way of life. Currently based in Cape Town, the label offers wedding dresses, made-to-order evening wear and also ready-to-wear garments, which they showcased at the recent Cape Town Fashion Week.

For this new range, Danielle Margaux looked to the past, specifically the 1950's. Focusing on how women were very feminine and how they celebrated their curves:

"It has a very strong French Riviera influence and the colour palette is derived from a peacock feather ..the blues, the greens and I added in yellow and brought in neutrals ( grey and milk ) to soften it .

This range was much more colourful than my past ranges. I wanted to still keep the clothing chic, but I was much more bold with the colours than usual!

My point of differentiation is that my brand is very classic with a modern twist. Slight details are added in here and there to make the clothing special. Quality is very important and to make women look beautiful. To celebrate the curves of a woman.

I take special care that the garments must fit well and comfortably and therefore are very selective with the fabrics I use."

We are all about inspiration - what inspires you about SA Fashion?
South African fashion is very creative and we have so many good designers here. It is also very diverse..we have a lot of ready to wear designers and we have designers who can create beautiful couture dresses.

What's in store for the future?
I would like to expand to sell in Johannesburg and would love to open my own boutique in the next year..

Life Purpose and Making Dreams Real

In these past few weeks I have been receiving small hints on pursuing my life purpose. The last few days however have been challenging healthwise, which has made me reach an existential crisis, as JP from Kingpin Coach would put it. Finding our life purpose – and not just writing it down but actually taking it on(JP). I truly believe that dedication to this blog is just the beginning of what my purpose is. South Sudan is officially a new country as of today. They still have to go through a whole process from the UN and other countries but today is a new day for them. They apparently already have a national anthem and a national flag but other items that make it more concrete like a currency, still needs to be implemented.

That is why on this Fashion Friday I thought it fits to feature the most well known export from South Sudan - Alek Wek. I wonder if they would make her an ambassador of sorts? In these images she poses for Andrew Yee in 'Global Gathering' spread for the Financial Times.

Motherland Coffee heats up Rosebank

If I had the nerve to start up a coffee shop, I would have started Motherland Coffee shop. I love the concept behind this cosy coffee spot at the update Rosebank area in Johannesburg. This, in my opinion was a well thought out concept, from the name to the menu, coffee beans to the decor.

Highlights for me:
- The decor is cosy and comfortable, you can choose a little nook if you want to do work in some peace and quite
- 'You are the revolution' packaging ties in well with the theme of the store
- The coffee beans are from Rwanda & Ethiopia - another indication of true United Republic. I love buying the beans as gifts for friends and family
-The mother-cuppa coffee mug is really a 'mother of a cup'
- The measurements of a cup of coffee has to be the most on-point idea I have yet seen! They have used the cultural symbols that indicate size. Very insight driven
- Finally, the variations of coffee they can make for you is anything from Ice D'Ivoire (get it) to The Dictator (made with condense milk with a blurb informing you that if you drink it, everyone will obey you for the day!)

They are handmade by women in Nairobi, Kenya. The bags have a sense of simplicity but you definitely see the renowned edginess of Vivienne. An even more compelling reason to get the bags is that the bags are made from recycled materials!

This day in 1976 is the day that the youth of South Africa took to the streets to protest against the use of Afrikaans as the medium to be taught in School. I think this is the first time South African youth showed the strength and participation in voicing what they believed was wrong. This indicated how strong the youth were and continue to be.

We commemorate this day to those brave souls and hope the youth of today recognise the importance of that day and continue to fight for change.

Canteen Cafe at Arts on Main

This has been one of my favourite spots for about a year now. Great spot to have breakfast over the weekend with family and friends - especially during summer. Canteen Cafe is in the Arts on Main premises set in the old factory part of Joburg town. The modest cafe has loft-style interior, in keeping with the origins of the building. The cafe opens out into an olive-tree courtyard, which is great to sit in during hot summers.

The Cafe and entire Arts on Main has a lot of buzz, especially on Sundays when they have Market on Main.

For the cold and rainy Johannesburg, I'm inspired to blog about Rain Africa:

"In Africa, rain gives life and life depends on it. The cycle of the season is born into all living things, young and old. Rain is the gift that brings simple wealth to the plains, villages and mountains."

Curio Home

I love the 'lived-in' look and not too keen on the minimalist decor. I supposed its due to growing up in the countryside and my mom appreciating all things African. These picture remind me of those good all days of many African collectibles that some how don't seem to clutter the space:

- the collection of walking and dancing sticks from Lesotho
- the seemingly disorganised display of clay wall statues
- artifacts collected from travels across Africa

I wish I appreciated it more when I was younger. I am now struggling to create the same look that will result in the same effect.

Beyonce Dances African

A lot of compliments have been posted on Beyonce's latest music video 'Run The World(Girls)'. What is of importance to us is the African influenced dancing. People who are not exposed to the origins of the dance are usually very impressed with the technical fluidity of the performers. Beyonce's choreographer Frank Gatson, Jr. best describes the dance moves as "a great vocabulary of movement."

There are several African influences in the video:
- most of the customs have North African influence
- the foot work pantsula dance, originates from South Africa
- the dance sequence which incorporates the knee scissor action with the circling of the hand over the head can be seen at the Congolese club scene
- the two dancers in the video as seen above, who also trained Beyonce and her team, is a group called Tofo Tofo from Mozambique
- the video also features Nigeria/American dancer Celestina Aladekoba
- screen shot with Beyonce holding two hyenas on a leash is from South African Pieter Hugo’s photographic art of Nigerian “Hyena Men.”

Now that is what we call true UNITED REPUBLIC - different nations, one republic.

Winter Food

South Africa's popular butternut soup is in high order at the moment due to the cold front the country is experiencing. Too popular to find on store shelves.

Don't know how I missed this last month when I went to Stellenbosch, Western Cape! This includes a fabulous restaurant, an extensive art collection and wine cellar. It is one of the new spots 'on-the-block' but seems to be getting great airplay.

Li-bel is based in the cafe neighbourhood of Sunnyside, Pretoria. Cafe style food written daily on the blackboard. To go with the quirkiness of the store, they also sell trinkets, selection of jams, jewellery and art pieces.

Always makes me smile when I see African produced products being presented at a restuarant. Willow Creek is such a brand. Willow Creek Estate lies in the Nuy Valley, in the Western Cape. The first olive trees were put up in 1999 and in 2002 the first oil was pressed.

There is no indication on whether they export internationally but they have the potential to 'play' globally.

Since its Africa Day, I thought it would be appropriate to share my love of old maps of Africa. I enjoy discovering how individuals interpreted the demarkation of this beautiful continent. The above maps were spotted at Amatuli store in Johannesburg.

Africa Day is the annual commemoration on May 25 of the 1963 founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU). On this day, leaders of 30 of the 32 independent African states signed a founding charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. - Wiki

I have been in love with these chairs from Amatuli Art Shop for a while now. The chairs are made entirely from beads that have been intricately placed to form the different images on them. I am not certain that I would allow anyone to sit on one if I had it in my home - its an art piece!

Wolves Cafe

Dynamic team Angie Batis, Shane Durrant and Greg Rom are the brains behind Wolves Cafe located in Illovo, Johannesburg. Combined they have worked in design, advertising, film and Shane is the front man for the band Desmond and the Tutus. Their creative backgrounds are evident in the quirky and retro interiors of the cafe. Word has it that they actually went to family members to get furniture and trinkets one sees in the cafe.

When you do visit, make sure you try their Red Velvet cake.

Bunny Chow Vote

With the weather in South Africa starting to be on the cold side, and voting in South Africa happening tomorrow, it is only fit to give you a warm recipe from one of the country's famous dishes: Bunny Chow - originating from Durban, workers packed their lunch in a literal edible lunchbox....

Ostrich and Lentil Bunny Chow
Extra virgin olive oil, for frying
500g ostrich mince
1 onion, chopped
3 Tbsp (45ml) mixed spices
garlic, ginger & dhania paste
2 Tbsp curry powder
1 Tbsp ground cumin
1 Tbsp ground coriander
5 cardamom pods, husks removed
1.5 cups Malay marinade
1 cup water
salt and milled pepper
1 can lentils, drained

For serving:
1 loaf white bread, unsliced
1 tub low-fat plain yoghurt
Diced red onion, cherry tomatoes and coriander

Prepare and cook mince with spices as you would ordinary curry.
Cut bread into 4, hollow out some of the soft centre to create a generous hollow. Spoon curry into hollows, top with yoghurt and diced veg. Serve immediately with soft bread centres for dipping.

I have named the above images Safari Apartments. This is probably nothing like what the owners or designers were thinking but that is the feeling I get from just viewing the images. I think its an ingenious idea to bring some Safari into a small city apartment - tricky but smart:

- clutter-free space
- clean lines
- antique wood elements
- typical clichéd decor pieces such as hats

Hotel Lamunu

If I had money to start a hotel, it would be based on this concept and decor. Hotel Lamunu (meaning Orange in SeSotho) is based in Braamfontein, Johannesburg and caters to the young crowed. Whoever developed the concept was brilliant.

They thought about the target market and where its located:
- The Orange colour makes the hotel young and is throughout the entire hotel without making it 'repetitive' or overdone.
- Down the corridors they have placed large quotes of famous writers and artists, who come from Braamfontein.
- The furniture pieces are 'upgrades' of everyday township utilities.

I urge anyone in or visiting Johannesburg to give this place a peak.

Africa's Greatest Entrepreneurs

I've been deliberating upon my future prospects and again the notion of being an entrepreneur keeps creeping up. I dusted this old book out of the shelf and busy reading through it for some inspiration. Its a book that I received from the GIBS business school in Johannesburg. I also attended a talk there where a few entrepreneurs, who we have featured on this blog, were on the panel.

I am inspired by how these individuals had simple ideas but have now created brands that will continue on through generations.

I thought this advert from Le Creuset , where they place the pots to show the South African flag, conveys the sentiment from the HSBC research results. The advert was part of a campaign they ran in 2010 in line with the World Cup.

On this Decor Monday, we are inspired by this inner city apartment in downtown Johannesburg. Given the concrete nature of city living, this apartment owner brought in some greenery indoors. We are loving the rustic tree trunk tables that bring an element of nature to the living area.

My Tourism Indaba

I mentioned on Twitter this week that Tourism Indaba is currently on in Durban. Its the largest tourism marketing event on the African calendar. One of the resolutions I made the beginning of the year was to explore the continent in my own little way - be it digitally or physically. I have only managed to travel to a few places within South Africa and recently to Lesotho and Seychelles. The images above are just a snapshot of what I saw:

Spotted this headrest at the Rosebank Flea market in Johannesburg and gave it a prominent position in our reception area. There are a variety of headrests from the different corners of Africa. The one selected is rather small but I love the elaborate bead work done on it.

I have always had an affinity to thatch-roofed homes - I blame my mother. And my dream is to eventually own a thatch masterpiece home of my own one day. That is why the above lodge immediatly caught my attention. The Venda Village Lodge is set on the Soutpansberg mountains in Limpopo Province, South Africa. They punt themselves as an eco-friendly accommodation option for those looking for a little adventure. What I admire about this lodge is how they have managed to balance the traditional way of building homes with modern considerations.

The Mother of the Nation is having her story told in Opera style. Famous and talented singers will be telling the story of Winnie Mandela - the beautiful, captivating yet head strong leader. The opera will touch both the positive and the negative elements of this political figure. I think this should be an extraordinary performance that one can not miss. WAFRICA way of Life

While watching the news this week, they interviewed South African rescue workers who were sent over to Japan to help with recovering of people in the recent disaster. It reminded me of a post I once saw on Afroklectic. The above images are from a collection from Senegalese designer Serge Mouangue, under his label Wafrica. The aim here is to perfect Japanese architectural designs with African fabric. I believe he has managed to create a great balance in incorporating both cultures in stylish sensibility.

Meet Anel founder and owner of Canned Culture. She started an organisation that assists individual artists to create sustainable business models. All the artist are self-trained and live by selling their goods on the streets or in markets. Over and above creating the sustainability, she finds vacant spaces and has a POP-UP store to showcase and sell their goods. I came across Canned Culture at the Brixton Mall in Pretoria and bought a lampshade from a street vendor she discovered.

Anel explained that the name of the company is really about 'preserving' South African culture - hence the use of 'Canned'.

Thursday until Sunday, Canned Culture will have a location at the Woodlands mall. If you can, go and support local South African artists.

Prive in Atholl Square, Johannesburg, has been open for a year now and is still going strong. The owner Thabang, strongly believes in the concept of having a quaint, well decorated place, that serves good quality food. Prive does just that. Modern African decor with Afro-Asian food.

Got these from The Orient Hotel, just outside of Johannesburg. The packaging design is what attracted me to the cookies, and it was worth it. I don't know much about the cookies and if the lady on the packaging is Aunty Aggi, and if she is really the person who makes the cookies.

Tienie Pritchard - Marriage market

I stumbled upon an art gallery late last year and discovered some great sculptural art. The artist is Tienie Pritchard and he is a well-recognised sculpturer in South Africa and abroad. The forms and themes he chooses are phenominal! These images above are from the work entitled The Marriage Market:

The sculpture depicts a slave market somewhere in the Orient round about 1800, where an Arab slave trader puts his ware up for sale. His target market is the Sultans, who bought female slaves for their harems, to serve as concubines or who might be lucky enough to become one of his wives. The women are from different nations and races - Muslim society was not race or colour conscious.
The women differ further in age and physique. They are real people from different walks of life, captured and carried away from their homes and loved ones. They are all resigned to their fate, inwardly battling the humiliation, hurt and shame. Although they are sharing the same predicament, everyone's attention is turned inwardly, each one solitary in the contemplation of her own sorrow. The standing girl is the youngest and the prime exhibit of the day. She is from Abyssinian origin, a firm favourite under slave traders because of their women's reputed beauty. Abyssinian slaves were much sought after and fetched high prices.
